Valerie Singleton thrives on variety, which she finds in abundance on Blue Peter. Her assignments have taken her on whirlwind trips, from a day in Africa to a near-trip to Bangkok, and a quick jaunt to Boulogne, where she was described as "une jeune et jolie personne de 27 ans." "I can't bear things to be the same every day," she explains, preferring the unexpectedness of the job to her previous role as an announcer. Since joining the show in September 1962, Valerie has become a favorite among children. She has found that her wide interests—including riding, yachting, and skiing—often feature in her reports. She also enjoys crafts and has a great fondness for animals, especially Jason and Petra. A former actress, Valerie attended RADA before moving into TV plays and commercials. The opportunity to become an announcer presented a difficult choice, and she admits she "hankered after" acting for a long time. However, she clearly loves Blue Peter, and its audience loves her in return.

Blue Peter Goes Supersonic This morning John and Peter. waved Lesley off at London Airport as she joined the VIPs on Concorde's first passenger flight to Washington. At 4.50 (our time) LESLEY arrives at Dulles Airport and makes Blue Peter's first live report from the United States in this specially extended edition of the programme. Back in the Blue Peter studio JOHN and PETER meet Bluey and Jester, two of Britain's last remaining pit ponies, who are now film stars and Val visits the Music Room at Brighton Pavilion, devastated by fire six months ago, and talks to the craftsmen who will be working on the restoration.

A thousand programmes later ... ' Way back in 1966, if anyone had told me that during the next 12 years I'd make a five-mile fall out of an aeroplane, crash at 90 mph on a bob-sleigh, climb to the top of Nelson's Column-twice, become a cook, vault over a ditch and be trodden on by an elephant, I'd never have believed them! But they've all happened to me during my thousand or so appearances on Blue Peter. Today you can watch some of those extraordinary experiences.' (JOHN NOAKES )

Expedition USA Hollywood, Houston, New Orleans and Washington are all on the itinerary of Blue Peter's whistle-stop tour of the USA. Today Lesley and Simon join in the New Orleans 4 July Independence Day celebrations, complete with a dazzling fireworks display. The human members of the team look pretty much the same. but Goldie, TV's most famous golden retriever, has trebled her size since she last appeared on the programme! Blue Peter film cameras were down on the farm at Dethick, in Derbyshire, to record Simon's reactions to his monster pup on his return from the USA.

Simon finds that riding the ship of the desert can be a bruising experience as he and his camel part company, but the 80 pantomime horses that invade the studio today are a bit more docile. Fit for a Queen A teddy made of chrysanthemums, a koala bear with a plum for a nose and an owl sitting under a banana moon were just three of the hundreds of stunning floral displays admired by Her Majesty The Queen when she made her first-ever visit to Westminster Cathedral for the International Year of the Child Flower Festival. Blue Peter film cameras were there to record this historic event and so were nine Blue Peter viewers aged from five to 16 -winners of the Flower Picture competition. For Cristian, Kate, Una, James, Christine, Rebecca, Lesley, Jenny and Sarah, who were all presented to Her Majesty, this particular Friday the 13th was one they'll remember for the rest of their lives!
