Herbert Hisel
Biography
Herbert Hisel (June 22, 1927 – September 21, 1982) was a German comedian and humorist, best known as the most popular Franconian comic performer of the 1960s and 1970s. Performing in the Nuremberg dialect, he became famous for his storytelling monologues and his trademark phrase “Jou wergli” (“Yes, really”), which earned him widespread recognition and multiple Gold Records. Originally trained as a mechanical engineer, Hisel turned professional entertainer in the early 1960s and became a major figure in regional cabaret, carnival culture, and recorded comedy. In addition to his stage work, he appeared in films during the late 1960s and 1970s. After periods spent performing in North America, Hisel died in Canada at the age of 55, remaining a lasting icon of Franconian popular humor.
